In God we trust. All others pay cash.
Not too long ago the Midland Branch of my county's public library featured a public display sponsored by the local Secular Humanist organization. Among the many featured books in the display was a copy of Susan Jacoby's 2004 book Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism.
The book looked promising so I vowed to give it a shot if I ever
got a chance. Recently I found a copy at my local library. I loved it
Jacoby covers the 200 year long evolution of secular
thought in this country. Her book is incredibly detailed with no era
of American history left unexamined. This is a must read book for any
student of American history, especially social history. It's also a
great follow-up read to Jon Meacham's recent Newsweek article on secularism in America. And speaking of Jon Meacham, after Freethinkers I would like to read his history of American civil religion American Gospel: God, the Founding Fathers and the Making of a Nation. I think it would compliment Jacoby's book rather well.
